Hi Harry - Where did you see this sturgeon? I am a sturgeon biologist in NY and keep track of where dead ones are found. Thanks
This photo was taken on the Manhattan side of the Hudson at about 120th St on May 30th 2009.
The fish was about 6 ft long. We saw another smaller (Maybe 4 ft long) dead sturgeon nearby later that day. Any idea what could have killed them?
Thanks Harry. Tough to say. Could be a number of things such as natural causes, bycatch mortality, hit by a boat or an array of other things. Did you take pics of the other one too? Reason I ask is that there are 2 species of sturgeon. That one is definitely an Atlantic sturgeon, based on size alone. The other one could have been a shortnose sturgeon which is listed as endangered.
cool
